The protection space available to Syrians in Tunisia was preserved in 2014. The Syrian population of concern grew rapidly in Tunisia during the reporting period. While the number of registered Syrians with UNHCR Tunis cannot be compared with that of other operations in the immediate region neighbouring Syria (558 as of 31/12/2014), it is still a significant phenomenon in Tunisia as the number of Syrians present in Tunisia is considered to be more important, around 5 000. The Syrian population registered with UNHCR is spread over the whole territory, with a significant concentration in the Tunis area and around the city of Sfax. The demographic profile differs from that of other PoCs as they are mostly families which include sometimes elderly persons and young children. UNHCR Tunis has been able to mobilise additional funding in order to attend the assistance needs of this population of concern. In terms of assistance, Syrian registered with UNHCR are nonetheless treated like all other refugee registered with the Office. They have access to school and medical treatment. Due to their demographic characteristics, their medical needs are however more important. From a protection perspective, the Tunisian authorities have been more rigorous with those Syrians entering Tunisia irregularly from Algeria. A number of them were arrested and placed in immigration detention. Some were also returned to Turkey, following irregular arrival in Tunisia. These were not cases that were registered with UNHCR in Tunisia.
