Resettlement

2019

2019 saw a significant rise in the resettlement quotas compared to 2018. There was resettlement staffing capacity in place through affiliate arrangements.

Operations in the Southern Africa region submitted a total of 897 cases (3,066 individuals) to various resettlement countries. The United States received the majority of submissions (676 cases, representing 2,270 individuals), followed by Canada (139 cases, representing 402 individuals). Sweden, Finland, and Norway received the reminder.
Resettlement cases in the region were identified through the UNHCR helpline, protection needs assessments and through pre-agreed criteria in UNHCR’s proGres v4 database.

UNHCR operations in the region continued to strengthen anti-fraud measures and training with partners, together with interpreters and refugee community leaders in 2019. Anti-fraud town hall meetings with the target population were held in various locations.
