Global Appeal 2025 | Regional Overview
At the end of 2023, the 16 countries that make up the southern Africa region hosted 10.1 million forcibly displaced people, returnees and stateless people. Most were families displaced within the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Mozambique. At the same time, 1 million refugees were living in protracted displacement situations and an increasing number were moving onwards, joining others as part of mixed movements of refugees and migrants on routes within and to sub-Saharan Africa.
