One year of spiralling conflict: Data story

girl playing with stones
As of April 2024, more than 570,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Chad since the Sudan conflict started one year ago. Madiha, aged 13, loves arts in school. After arriving in Chad, her family was relocated from the border to Farchana refugee settlement where they received a family shelter. Now Madiha and her sister enjoy creating heart shapes with stones next to their new shelter. "Drawing these hearts brings me joy". © UNHCR/Ying Hu

Sudan, which has a long record of generously hosting refugees, used to be home to over 1 million refugees - the second highest refugee population in Africa - mainly from South Sudan, Eritrea, Syria, and Ethiopia, as well as the Central African Republic, Chad and Yemen.

Over the years, outbreaks of violence have also forced people to flee within Sudan, with over 3.7 million people internally displaced and over 800,000 Sudanese refugees seeking safety and protection across borders.

The current fighting has already displaced over 800,000 people inside Sudan. In addition, over 220,000 refugees and refugee returnees have left Sudan.

UNHCR is working closely with governments and partners in all countries neighbouring Sudan to respond to those who have arrived and prepare for more new arrivals.
