Co-existence with local communities

UNHCR and partners have invested in promoting peaceful co-existence activities with different communities, especially in the eastern part of the country.

In Kalemie, 583 awareness-raising sessions on peace and peaceful coexistence were organized in return areas of Kalemie, Manono, Moba and Pweto through 380 focus groups, 36 open sessions, 34 participatory theatres and 133 door-to-door outreach sessions.

24,372 people (8,017 men, 8,691 women, 3,780 boys and 3,884 girls) were reached with peaceful co-existence messaging. 1,432 radio spots on peace and peaceful co-existence were recorded and broadcast on partner community radio stations in the territories of Kalemie, Manono, Moba, Nynzu and Pweto (206 broadcasts carried out), 738,803 listeners were reached. Two women's associations with 118 members were trained in peace and peaceful coexistence in Manono territory, the Kiambi health zone. Two projects to bring communities together for the promotion of peaceful coexistence are evaluated and implemented in Mpala, Moba territory targeting members of the Twa and Bantu communities. In the Pweto return areas (Kansabala, Cantonnier, Mbolyo, Mushima and Kizabi) bringing together 663 households from two Twa-Bantu communities (spontaneous returnees from Zambia, returned IDPs and Zambian asylum-seekers). In the same vein, two community projects have been developed for the Twa and Bantu communities in the Mpala agglomeration in the Moba territory on community agriculture and sports activities for young people. Other activities included mediation and dispute resolution, resulting in 328 conflict resolution mediations.

In the Kasai, NRC conducted two protection community-based analyses which were pertinent to identify needs and inform the response. War Child produced 288 media spots on peaceful co-existence. 300 mediators were trained on mediation skills and 15 IDPs committee were established to have a reflection on the durable solution and peaceful co-existence solutions. 10 dialogue sessions were organized in Kasaï, Kasaï Central and Kasaï Oriental. 24 awareness session were organized by AIDES in Demba et Mutoto reaching 4,768. 30 awareness-raising session on peace education were organized by Kadima Foundation and 46 community conflicts were solved.

In Ituri Province, UNHCR conducted a series of awareness-raising sessions (24 sessions were conducted with IDP and host communities, 3 social cohesion projects set up and 1 sustainable project was implemented). These activities have greatly contributed to consolidating favourable conditions to protection, participation, community acceptance among the Hema and Lendu communities and strengthening peaceful coexistence between host population, displaced persons, returnees, and local authorities.
