For decades, India has been hosting diverse refugee groups and has successfully found solutions for many forcibly displaced people. UNHCR supports the efforts of the Government of India and its people in providing assistance to refugees across 11 States, working closely with various stakeholders, including line ministries, community groups, and NGOs. UNHCR’s focus is on addressing protection needs, conducting registration and refugee-status determination promoting solutions and self-reliance.

The UNHCR India office covers the Maldives, where it works closely on capacity-building efforts, inclusion, and addressing the international protection needs of those forced to flee.
