The Central African Republic (CAR) grapples with a protracted humanitarian and protection crisis due to political instability, forced displacement, and a weak economy. With over 515,000 internally displaced and 740,000 refugees in neighboring countries, the country faces significant challenges. Despite increased presence of local authorities post the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, armed groups persist, perpetuating conflict and hindering returns.
UNHCR's strategy aims to reinforce protection mandates, support government efforts, and seek durable solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons. This involves promoting accountability, community-based protection, and preventing statelessness. Collaborative efforts under the Yaoundé Declaration aim to address regional challenges and facilitate comprehensive solutions for CAR refugees, aligning with the objectives of the Global Compact for Refugees.
