During the last Argentine military dictatorship, he and his family were forced into exile in Spain. At that time, they were recognized as refugees and received support from UNHCR. In 2021, on World Refugee Day, Santiago reconnected with his personal history when he was invited by UNHCR to create a musical piece that celebrated refugees through their voices and everyday sounds. © UNHCR/Markel Redondo

Argentina has hosted over 150,000 Venezuelan nationals in the past five years. In collaboration with partners and local authorities, UNHCR ensures access, regularization, and integration. Local support initiatives promote the inclusion of refugees in national services, employment, and vocational training.

Bolivia, as a transit country, faces challenges in migrant protection. UNHCR monitors the situation, provides normative development support, and offers essential goods, temporary housing, and livelihood assistance. Local partnerships in border areas guarantee the right to access and regularization for those staying.

In Chile, UNHCR collaborates with partners, government institutions, civil society and communities. The focus is on ensuring international protection, advocating for integration, and promoting durable solutions for over 450,000 refugees, asylum-seekers, and others in need of international protection. Special attention is given to working alongside hosting communities to promote peaceful coexistence, reduce xenophobic expressions, and foster positive social processes where both Chileans and newcomers collaborate for the benefit of their communities.

Paraguay maintains an open-door policy with an active refugee eligibility system. UNHCR and government partners enhance administrative capacities by providing access, asylum procedures, and local integration. Efforts also focus on promoting refugee self-reliance, socio-economic integration, and supporting small-scale businesses.

In Uruguay, UNHCR supports asylum and regularization, preventing refoulement. Collaborating with local counterparts, the programming emphasizes inclusion, health, education, and labor market integration. Long-term goals involve creating complementary pathways through labor mobility and sustainable resettlement.
