The continuous influx of Nigerians refugees and Niger citizens from Nigeria causes pressure on the already insufficient socio-economic resources and the capacity of host families. This may push the Government to open-up refugee’s sites so as to ensure better protection and improved targeted assistance.
About 10,000 displaced people have found refuge on the islands of Lake Chad, where access is extremely difficult if not impossible for UNHCR from both a security and logistical stand point. UNHCR plans to establish a remote management mechanism, in collaboration with United Nations sister agencies to provide protection and adequate assistance to the displaced population. Logistical capacity will have to be strengthened in order to cope with the logistical challenges of the area.
All identified activities related to Nigerian refugees in Niger require significant financial resources. For this particular reason, related activities will be designed and implemented in complementarity with development partners. However, if not fully implemented, it is likely that issues identified above will remain unaddressed, which may affect the protection of persons of concern and the security situation in the Diffa District, bordering with the North Nigeria.
