UNHCR’s sub-office in Jijiga began programme implementation in 2014 despite significant funding gaps. Despite tight resource allocations, the Jijiga operation is providing basic services to refugees and asylum seekers from Somalia in accordance with international standards.
- 100 per cent of the reported SGBV cases received support.
- 100 per cent of survivors who were consulted reported that the community wellbeing initiative (CWI) met their expectations.
- In addition, the office completed 100 per cent of safe house construction in Awbarre and 95 per cent of safe house construction in Shedder.
- Best Interest Assessments (BIAs) were conducted for close to 150, 100 and 40 at-risk children in Awbarre, Shedder and Kebrebeyah camps, respectively. Moreover, UNHCR conducted over 70 Best Interest Determinations (BIDs) and over 35 BIAs involving close to 150 children for resettlement purposes.
- Enrolment increased significantly at all levels across the three camps:
- More than 980 children in Awbarre, 1250 in Shedder, and 1040 in Kebribeyah are attending preschool.
- Over 2,250 children in Awbarre, 2,450 in Shedder, and 3,000 in Kebribeyah are attending primary school.
- Similarly, more than 660 children in Awbarre, 660 in Shedder, and 400 in Kebribeyah camp are attending secondary school.
- 100 per cent of mothers living with HIV received information on prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and were provided with anti-retroviral therapy (ART) medications during their pregnancy. In addition, 100 per cent of persons living with HIV and AIDS also had access to ART services.
- The current supply of potable water stands at 15, 19 and 17 litres of water per person per day in Kebribeyah, Awbarre and Shedder, respectively.
