Nonetheless, since December 2005, UNHCR has carried out registration, processed asylum claims, provided targeted assistance and pursued durable solutions following a Memorandum of Understanding made with the Government of Sri Lanka.
UNHCR Sri Lanka also facilitates the voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan refugees living in India. With the decreasing number of people forced to flee in Sri Lanka over the past decade and the success in finding durable solutions for many, UNHCR has scaled back its operational presence and will transition to a liaison presence in January 2025. Consequently, UNHCR’s current focus is on working with key government stakeholders, service providers, operational partners and other relevant entities to strengthen their capacity to improve the refugee protection environment. UNHCR will continue its basic assistance programme from 2025 for the residual caseload of asylum-seekers and refugees in the country.
