In its Strategic Directions 2022-2026, UNHCR identified several areas that would benefit from focused attention, and pledged to tackle them with discipline and unwavering commitment.
The floods in the Koukou department, hosting the Goz-Amir refugee settlement, this year have been reported as the worst since 1972, significantly affecting both the local population and the refugee community. Areas previously habitable are now submerged, leading to displacement and loss of property.
Meaningful participation of forcibly displaced communities in decisions affecting their lives is essential, requiring transparent communication, feedback mechanisms, and opportunities to leverage their skills. In 2025, UNHCR will enhance these efforts.
People with a valid claim to protection often undertake desperate and dangerous journeys, during which they face severe threats. UNHCR seeks to prevent dangerous journeys by strengthening asylum systems, combating misinformation, raising awareness of risks, and advocating for safe, regular pathways to protection.
The global climate crisis is intensifying forced displacement and exacerbating the vulnerabilities of displaced and stateless people, who urgently need investment to build resilience and reduce climate risk.
By mid-2024, 70 million people were internally displaced by conflict or violence, a figure projected to double by 2030 if current trends persist. In 2025, UNHCR will continue to support States in protecting and finding solutions for internally displaced people.
Millions of people are stateless. In 2025, bolstered by a new Global Alliance to End Statelessness, UNHCR will aim to persuade more States to demonstrate their commitment to tackle statelessness, while ensuring more stateless people can apply for nationality.
In December 2023, the Global Refugee Forum resulted in over 2,000 pledges of support to advance the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees. Looking ahead to 2025, UNHCR aims to sustain momentum by facilitating pledge implementation.
Recognizing that humanitarian funding alone cannot address protracted displacement, UNHCR is collaborating with development actors. In 2025, efforts will focus on fostering greater engagement from international financial institutions and promoting the inclusion of displaced populations in national services and economies.
