Resettlement remains the only viable protection tool and durable solution available to refugees in Assosa as very few refugees are willing to repatriate, and the prospects for local integration are extremely limited. Although a peace agreement has been signed in Sudan, refugee still flee to Ethiopia due to tribal conflicts in Blue Nile and Darfur in Sudan. Thus, voluntary repatriation may not be feasible due to ongoing conflicts in some areas of South Sudan, Sudan and Great Lakes countries.
In 2020, 134 individuals from Tsore refugee camp were identified in need of resettlement, and 131 individuals submitted to resettlement countries. Following outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, UNHCR successfully planned and organized the remote select resettlement interviews for all refugees who were submitted to Norway. Consequently, Norway has decided to continue remote interviews for selection of refugees in 2021. Qualifying refugees were supported by UNHCR resettlement teams to apply for scholarship opportunities in European countries. In 2020, two refugees were successfully awarded scholarships in Italy. Several other refugees have applied for scholarships to Germany and Italy.
