UNHCR works with CNR for the individual registration of refugees in the country. In North and South Kivu, UNHCR ensured the registration of a total of 1,749 urban refugees.
In North Kivu, there were a total of 732 refugees (394 women and 338 men) in the urban area of Goma (mainly Burundian, Rwandan and Ugandan refugees). UNHCR in North Kivu registered the refugees in the ProGres database and ensured that the registration data was updated progressively. A verification exercise was organized in August 2017 for North Kivu.
In South Kivu on the other hand, a total of 1, 017 refugees (mainly essentially of two nationalities: 754 Rwandese and 263 Burundian) are registered in the ProGres database since 2015 and 2016. Amongst them 408 are urban refugees receiving assistance (245 from Burundi and 163 from Rwanda) and 609 urban refugees and asylum-seekers who are non-assisted (from Rwanda). UNHCR Bukavu supported the CNR to systematically register asylum-seekers in the ProGres database. The utility of having all asylum-seekers in the ProGres database was explained to the CNR at various meetings and during a capacity building session for CNR staff on the RSD. A considerable effort was noted during 2017 as 35 asylum-seekers who arrived in 2016 were registered.
