Returns from Iran and Pakistan to Afghanistan - Response and Financial Requirements

In April 2025, the rate of Afghan returns across the Pakistan border surged rapidly, with over 144,500 Afghans crossing back into Afghanistan, many under duress or coercion. This increase is part of a broader trend, as UNHCR estimates that more than 3 million Afghans have returned or been deported from Pakistan and Iran since September 2023, including over 1.5 million in 2024 alone. Both countries, despite their own challenges, continue to host millions of Afghan refugees. However, the recent spike in returns is placing additional strain on Afghanistan's already overstretched resources and services, complicating reintegration efforts and heightening the risk of further displacement.

To respond to this growing crisis, UNHCR seeks $71 million to respond to the sharp increase in Afghan returnees over the next nine months.
