Middle East and North Africa: Impact of Funding cuts on Operations

In 2024, despite generous support from many donors, the Middle East and North Africa region is expected to face further shortfalls. As of the end of April, operations in the region have received $256.4 million out of the $2,341 million required, which is approximately 11%.

Despite the number of forcibly displaced continues to grow, UNHCR has been obliged to significantly reduce its planned expenditures in four countries – namely Jordan, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Yemen – by $93 million in total so far.

The lives of millions have been torn apart by trauma, conflict, persecution, insecurity or human rights violations, and over 130 million people are expected to be forcibly displaced or stateless by the end of 2024.

From 17 displacement situations to detailed plans for 50+ country operations, the urgent call for investment is louder than ever, with budgeted needs of $10.622 billion for 2024.
