Ghulam Sakhi, a skilled glassblower, finds himself in a challenging situation as one of the rare artisans in his province of Herat, Afghanistan. His livelihood has been further jeopardized by the recent earthquake, which not only damaged his home but also left his workshop partially in ruins. Each year, UNHCR publishes a Global Appeal setting out its expectations for the year ahead, describing the actions it plans to take in order to meet the anticipated needs of forcibly displaced and stateless people.

The Global Appeal, which is based on UNHCR's annual needs-based budget, examines the year ahead through several different lenses: looking at the outlook for funding, the global and regional pictures, and the various activities that UNHCR undertakes.
