Democratic Republic of the Congo - Refugees and asylum-seekers

2020

Urban refugees continue to express the need for assistance to enable their children to access to secondary and tertiary education to provide a better future for their children. However, these requests remain unmet due to lack of funding, which forces UNHCR to prioritize among its areas of intervention. Some chronic illnesses and other health problems are not covered by the mutual health insurance, which only covers treatment of refugees twice a year. 40% of health needs must be covered by the beneficiaries themselves. For outpatient consultations, the mutual health insurance covers only 50% of the costs. Generic drugs are purchased internationally, and this can take a long time while partners are not allowed to source locally. The centralization of the processing of refugee status determination files causes delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks and applicants are often not informed of the decision within the legal deadline of 6 months. A recommendation is to organize the status determination sessions at provincial level in order to speed up the process.
