The Republic of Türkiye hosts one of the largest refugee populations worldwide. UNHCR’s Türkiye operation is one of its largest operations globally, with offices and field presence in various locations.

Key statistics

people were registered as refugees in the country at the end of 2024, mostly from the Syrian Arab Republic

Since 1960, UNHCR has worked in close partnership with the Republic of Türkiye on asylum and refugee issues. This collaboration was further formalized with the signing of a Host Country Agreement on 1 September 2016, reinforcing long-standing cooperation.
In Türkiye, UNHCR’s key areas of focus include:
- leading and coordinating the efforts of UN agencies in support of Türkiye’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis
- enhancing the protection environment and facilitating access to national social support systems for those in need of international protection
- providing humanitarian assistance to refugees in both camp and urban settings, in close coordination with Turkish authorities
- supporting institutional and legislative efforts to strengthen the national asylum system through capacity-building initiatives.
