Key statistics

12,275

people were displaced or stateless (or returning from forced displacement) within the country at the end of 2024

7,803

people were registered as refugees at the end of 2024, mostly from Afghanistan, Myanmar and Somalia

$17.2 million

are needed in 2025 to ensure that operations and programmes in Indonesia are sustained

Refugees and asylum-seekers live in urban settings in several cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, the greater Jakarta area, Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Batam, Semarang, Surabaya, Denpasar, Makassar, Kupang and others.

In 2024, boat arrivals of Rohingya refugees declined to under 1,000, but misinformation and hate speech surged online, fueling tensions and hindering the humanitarian response. Indonesia hosts over 12,700 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Somalia.

UNHCR in Indonesia works closely with government counterparts, partners, other UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society supporters to protect refugees and asylum seekers and identify solutions for them. Our protection programmes are done in collaboration with stakeholders, including in the provision of emergency and life-saving assistance, as well as in addressing the special needs of forcibly displaced and stateless people.
