Health

2017

Health priorities for 2017 will focus on maintaining low mortality indicators and improving the quality of health-care services in Nyarugusu, including expansion and renovation of health facilities and the alleviation of overcrowding and delayed service provision at health sites. Provision Procurement of medical supplies and diagnostic equipment will be made to increase the diagnostic capacity of health facilities and avoid stock-outs of life-saving drugs. UNHCR also plans to scale up the level of mental health services, the quality of community-level preventive services, malaria prevention activities and procurement of long-lasting mosquito bed nets and provision of antimalarial drugs. UNHCR will also procure additional ambulances to assist with transporting emergency and selective patients to hospitals in Mwanza and Dar es Salaam and support visits by medical specialists to the camps.

With the limited funds allocated to the health sector, health services and standards will be compromised. Maintaining current under 5 mortality rate (0.9/1,000 live births/month) and crude mortality rate (0.4/1,000/month) will be seriously affected. The timely response to treat and prevent malaria, which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the camp, will be affected.
