Education

2020

In 2020, UNHCR and its implementing partners worked to improve the provision of quality, relevant and inclusive education not only for people of concern but also for host community children in the Diffa region. The activities implemented to improve access to primary school education for the target population include building four primary school classrooms in Sayam-Forage, and schools also received two latrines, two incinerators, and 100 tables, in addition to the repair of 185 pieces of school furniture. UNHCR also provided for the training of 40 teachers and 60 members of community structures (such as parents' committees). 1,000 children were registered in pre-school and 30,088 students were registered in primary school (including 15,850 girls and 14,238 boys). To improve access to secondary school for refugee and host community children, 40 teachers were trained on positive discipline, child protection and gender-based violence. A total of 548 refugee students were enrolled in secondary school (420 boys and 128 girls). 95 candidates applied for the BECE with a success rate of 69% - 69 candidates out of 100 (10 girls and 59 boys). Additionally, 59 candidates applied to the SSCE with 100% success. UNHCR’s actions contributed to strengthening government action, improving the quality of access to education, capacity building, enrolling children and keeping them in school. In addition, parents are increasingly aware of the importance of their children’s enrolment in schools due to community awareness campaigns reaching 1,788 persons.
