Education

2020

Results
The activities under this objective have been carried out thanks to funds of UNICEF and were implemented by INTERSOS until 31 July 2020. The formerly called project "Access to Education and Vocational Training to Strengthen the Resilience and Integration of Asylum-Seeking Children and Adolescents in Agadez" is since October 2020 baptized "Strengthening Protection and Education for Refugees and Asylum-Seekers at the Humanitarian Centre and in the transit huts of Agadez”. Both projects have achieved the following results: integration into the formal education system in the long term, access to early learning classes for pre-school children and vocational training for adolescents. This has had a significant impact on the mental and emotional health of those involved, particularly among unaccompanied children and adolescents.

The first project, which ended on 31 July 2020, has resulted in:
- Asylum-seeking and refugee children of pre-school age had access to early learning classes and were integrated into the reception schools.
- Asylum-seeking and refugee children of school age have had access to the formal education system over time.
- Asylum-seeking and refugee children and adolescents have had access to vocational training.
In terms of attendance, the following numbers were recorded:
- At the primary level 53 pupils including 28 girls
- At the pre-school level 42 including 19 girls
- Vocational training 71 including 4 girls
On the second project started in October and currently ongoing, it should be noted that only pre-school and primary education are considered for the PoC population, vocational training is not considered; the two partners UNICEF and INTERSOS have been informed by the UNHCR and exchanges are under way and a mid-term review is foreseen to this end.
In terms of attendance, the following can be noted:
- 29 children including 12 girls at pre-school
- 56 of which 29 girls in primary schools
- 42 for reading classes
Unmet needs
- Lack of resources considering minors and adolescents people of concern in vocational training activities
- Lack of funds for infrastructure and equipment for children with disabilities.
- Unplanned budget line by UNHCR this year for non-formal education for adults.
