Legal remedies and legal assistance

2020

Results
The beginning of 2020 was marked by the arrest and detention of 336 people of concern arrested following the demonstrations and the fire at the Humanitarian Centre on 4 January.
After a dismissal for 03, the 6 others were tried and given suspended sentences.
In addition to this monitoring, over the year 2020, 6 people of concern were monitored for situations of detention. As of 31 December, 2 people of concern were still in detention, one case in pre-trial detention and another convicted person due to be released on 6 February 2021.
Legal and judicial assistance was provided by the National Agency for Legal and Judicial Assistance (ANAJJ) through a defender.
It should be noted that during the trial of the people of concern accused for the events of 16 December 2019 to 04 January, a lawyer was made available by the alternative NGO Espace Citoyen for another four days, with the ANAJJ defender following up.
On an ongoing basis, coordination was made with the DREC/CNE for a UNHCR and DREC presence and facilitation of interpretation throughout the procedures.
