There are no official statistics regarding the number of stateless individuals or at risk of statelessness in Mozambique. As a follow-up to the Government of Mozambique’s pledge during the High-Level Segment on Statelessness in 2019 to undertake a qualitative study, UNHCR provided initial technical support to the Government. The comprehensive qualitative study aims to understand the dimension of the statelessness/risk of statelessness in the country and main protection gaps faced by stateless persons.
The exercise will also involve the Ministry of Justice and other relevant stakeholders. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the study was not conducted in 2020 and is expected to be conducted in 2021.
