Self-reliance and livelihoods

2017

Under the current budget constraints, UNHCR will not be in position to support all people of concern in need with livelihood opportunities. 335 IDPs, living in private accommodation will be provided with agricultural inputs, while 200 IDPs will be provided with vocational training (100 per cent of students will graduate). Within new activity, 100 will be assisted with entrepreneurship/business training and livelihoods sets or support to socially oriented small business associations. It is estimated that 78 per cent of beneficiaries will be self-employed afterwards. The educational component is implemented either through adult education centres, or within the apprentice’s workshop/ local companies. The beneficiaries can either apply for business micro loan in order to establish their own business or search for jobs in the private sector. Those who carried out apprenticeships often continue working within the same company. In addition, vocational training is the only local integration activity UNHCR implements for urban caseload in Belgrade and Kragujevac.

In parallel, UNHCR will encourage local development actors’ involvement in the implementation of livelihood projects, in line with SSG Initiative. UNHCR Serbia’s self-reliance activities are in accordance with the third Strategic Objective of UNHCR’s Global Strategy for Livelihoods (2014-2018), that aim at developing and expanding proven and innovative ways of supporting people’s economic self-reliance.
