2017

In line with the existing strategies and considering the budget to be allocated in 2017, the following activities will be prioritised in 2017:

  • establish a joint strategy with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees (MIDIMAR), MoE/REB, ADRA;
  • local education officials and the administration of schools in host communities to ensure access to 12 years of basic education to all refugee learners in all camp locations in accordance with MoU with MIDIMAR and MoE/REB to be agreed in 2016;
  • increase absorption capacity of host community schools following assessment missions with ADRA to be conducted in 2016;
  • increase number of qualified teachers while maintaining advocacy with MoE  for equivalences of Burundian teachers;
  • communicating and advocating with UNICEF and WFP, start ECD services in Kigeme and Mugombwa which has created a gap since April 2016 and ensure school feeding components in ECD for all the camps; also working with WFP start school feeding in G.S. Kageyo School for integrated upper secondary students;
  • increase local integration and livelihood prospects of refugee learners through facilitated access to tertiary education and the School of Excellence Initiative, working with Buffet Foundation and Kepler University.

 
In 2017, UNHCR will also work on:

  • Educate a Child (EAC) programme funded projects;
  • improve teaching environment by conducting training for newly recruited teaching staff to cater for newly enrolled students;
  • improve the tracking of school attendance by introducing mobile-based roll book to enable real-time tracking; (4) reduce dropout rate and support out of school children by providing scholarship for students with specific needs, building the capacity of parent-teacher association (PTA) members and promote their participation in school management to follow up, and conducting awareness-raising session on out of school children and education for community and religious leaders and parents;
  • mobilize education partners (UN agencies, government, NGOs) for the endorsement of a education multiyear plan.
