Water

2017

Even though three out of the five protracted camps are autonomous in terms of water supply (Kiziba, Nyabiheke and Mugombwa), in Nyabiheke camps the quantity of potable water supplied does not yet meet the minimum UNHCR standards of 20 liters per person per day, for protracted situation. The two others camps (Kigeme and Gihembe) are supplied through the national Water and Sanitation Company (WASAC), with substantial water scarcity, especially in Gihembe camp. Lack of backup systems (both pumps and generators) in all locations increase the camps’ vulnerability in case of failure of infrastructure allowing the operation of the water supply systems.

The comprehensive responsive would firstly be to ensure that proper backup systems are put in place in all locations. Moreover, supply systems of Nyabiheke and Kigeme camps need to be expanded in order to increase the daily water quantity with the objective of meeting the minimum UNHCR standards.
